Tecnalia is focused on developing materials that support a competitive European industrial battery value chain
Maialen Chapartegui, Rcihard Seddon and Sonia Florez, Project Managers and Researchers, explains the role and ambition of TECNALIA in the TALISSMAN project.
What specific innovations are you developing within the TALISSMAN project?
Tecnalia is developing a continuous process for the vacuum filtration of water based carbon nanotube dispersions to optimise the mechanical, physical, and electrical properties of a flexible, lightweight and highly conductive scaffold material for lithium metal anodes. The aim of this structure is that it can withstand the volume changes of the lithium material during charge and discharge cycles whilst also reducing the risk of lithium creeping and dendrite formation which are detrimental to long term battery performance.
How does Tecnalia’s technology help make batteries more sustainable for the planet?
The Tecnalia process aims to minimize complex and time-consuming processes that might limit scalability and industrialization by combining water based carbon dispersions and silver precursors in a single process – to be able to produce the anode structure whilst also improving its interaction with the lithium metal. The Tecnalia pilot line enables the collection of all waste liquids for either reuse in the preparation of new materials, or for their appropriate treatment, to help minimize the impact on the environment.
What impact could your work have on Europe’s energy and mobility industries?
Tecnalia is focused on developing materials that support a competitive European industrial battery value chain. Our work contributes to the state of the art by investigating and developing disruptive technologies to bridge the gap between R&D and industrial reality, to generate economic and social impact, and help accelerate Europe’s shift toward a 100% renewable electric system and zero-emission mobility.
