As TALISSMAN advances its work on next-generation lithium–sulphur battery technologies, effective communication and dissemination will be essential to ensure that its progress and results reach the audiences best placed to use them.
Pablo Morales, Communication Manager at Sustainable Innovations, leads TALISSMAN’s communication and dissemination activities. In this interview, he explains how the project plans to build an engaged community, translate complex research into accessible messages and maximise its long-term scientific, industrial and societal impact.
What is the main purpose of TALISSMAN’s communication and dissemination strategy?
The strategy is designed to ensure that TALISSMAN’s objectives, progress and results are communicated clearly, consistently and responsibly throughout the project. Our role is to connect the knowledge it generates with the people and organisations that can benefit from it.
This means addressing several audiences, including researchers, battery manufacturers, material providers, end-users, policymakers, industry associations and the wider public. Each group has different interests and levels of technical knowledge, so our messages and formats must be adapted accordingly. Ultimately, we want communication to support knowledge transfer, collaboration and the future uptake of TALISSMAN’s innovations.
How will you communicate such a complex and highly technical project to different audiences?
The key is to combine scientific accuracy with accessible storytelling. TALISSMAN is working on advanced lithium–sulphur battery technologies, but the significance of this research extends far beyond the laboratory. It is linked to safer and more efficient energy storage, European industrial competitiveness and the decarbonisation of demanding transport applications.
We will use a balanced mix of channels, including the project website, LinkedIn, newsletters, press releases, videos, scientific publications, conferences, workshops and webinars. Technical results will be shared through specialist channels, while visual and concise formats will help explain the project’s ambitions and potential benefits to broader audiences. The website acts as the central information hub, with other communication activities directing stakeholders towards it.
What would successful communication look like by the end of TALISSMAN?
Success will be measured through the quality of the relationships and exchanges created around the project. We want researchers to access and build upon TALISSMAN’s knowledge, industrial stakeholders to understand its potential applications, policymakers to recognise its contribution to European objectives and citizens to see the value of publicly funded battery research.
The strategy will evolve as the project progresses. We will monitor performance, assess the effectiveness of the different channels and adapt our approach according to the results and lessons learned. By the end of TALISSMAN, our ambition is to have established an active community that remains connected to the project’s results and supports their impact beyond its formal duration.
